... The two main weaknesses of the current Quebec government are tax cutting and the culture preservation issue. If Quebec is allowed to secede from Canada, the new country will collapse upon itself because these issues are creating governmental turmoil and stress.
Landry, who succeeds Lucien Bouchard, who resigned on March 9th, 2003, and was the best “salesman” of Quebec’s secession, has perfect separatist credentials, and is a longtime friend of Yves Michaud, the PQ “hardliner” whose chauvinist statements were condemned by the National Assembly and helped provoke Bouchard’s resignation. ... Landry, arguing that “if Quebec’s tax configuration is to remain competitive with Ontario and other adjacent provinces and US states, Quebec must make tax-cutting its first priority.”
In the weeks before his acclamation as PQ premier, Landry traveled around Quebec, speaking repeatedly on his commitment to change Quebec into a “normal” nation-state.
