After I graduate from college, I plan to earn my Ph.D. in communication studies and to use that education to help people of different cultures learn how to communicate better. My courses in organizational, interpersonal, and gender communication have taught me how to better serve my friends and colleagues of different cultures. Also, as a Ronald E. McNair Scholar, I am acquiring data on the research topic “How communication in the workplace between superior and subordinate is affected because of the difference of culture.” I am currently planning to study abroad in Valencia and Madrid, Spain, for the summer of 2003. I plan on taking what I have learned from my research and study abroading abroad to help my friends and family better communicate across cultural boundaries. Communicating across cultural boundaries is a lesson I have learned as a manager at Jack in the Box. Many times I wanted to be independent and to rush orders without allowing my Hispanic employees to help me. Therefore, I wondered at times why the Hispanic employees were not being independent also. At this time, I started to question my Hispanic friends about why they prefer to work as a family. I later learned that Hispanics are taught at a very young age that if they work together as a family they can better achieve success in life.
