The search for “the truth” in these films is not important because in both films, the ethical questions are never quite answered exactly. We’re never told precisely whether Morant had done what he did out of a desire to avenge his friend. ... The purpose of Breaker Morant is not to wax lyrical about whether Morant should have ordered the death of the Boer prisoners but rather to represent the nationalistic sentiment of Australians versus their ex-colonial masters, the British and the anti-war feelings thus whether the Australians in the film were guilty is kept ambiguous. For one thing, the people involved in that court case are all dead and the principal character himself was shot so the truth has been buried along with his corpse.
