Question: Was Macbeth just a simple killer? Let me start with a very shallow observation. I can think of some movies that would have been better had they been 20 minutes shorter, can't you? Those movies lacked enough substance to sustain the plot, but the director wanted to throw in more special effects or maybe a chase scene. The same holds for the movies' predecessor, theater. Characters and conflicts must have substance to hold our attention. If Macbeth were just a simple killer, we certainly wouldn't have enough substance for a five-act play.
