To the French, the type of leader was irrelevant; all they wanted was political and social reforms. Whoever could have done that, whether it be Louis XVI or Napoleon would have been satisfactory for the French. The French allowed Napoleon the position of Emperor for life because he met the demands of the French people France’s first try at democracy was the National Assembly, who favored a constitutional monarchy not unlike Brittan’s. The National Assembly published “The Declaration of the Rights of Man” which concerned other European monarchies by spreading new revolutionary ideas. The Assemblies biggest mistake was, “The Civil Constitution of the Clergy” which sold all the church lands in France. The church was now under the control of the state. Clergy were elected and expected to take an oath to the state. The proceeds of the church lands, called assigants, did not help recover the shattered economy in France and considering France was at war with most of Europe, there was a sense of panic.
