Mathematics learning disabilities are as multifarious and complex as those associated with reading disabilities. Unfortunately, difficulty mastering mathematics, or even understanding basic concepts, is acceptable in our society. ... Students that don’t seem to understand math are allowed to get by with remedial math and the assumption that they will never need to use advanced mathematics. Reality is that many students may actually be struggling with undiagnosed mathematics’ learning disabilities.
There is not a single learning disability associated with mathematics, mathematics learning disabilities are as varied as those associated with reading. There are mathematics disabilities that exist independently of reading difficulties. However, many students with mathematics learning disabilities also have reading disabilities. Common mathematics’ learning disabilities may stem from an individual’s difficulty in processing or understanding language, others might have trouble retaining math facts or keeping procedures in the correct order, some may not be able to grasp the visual spatial aspect of mathematics. Certain individuals may even suffer with emotional blocks that preclude them from learning mathematics. There can even be gender bias in mathematics. ... However, students with learning disabilities may have difficulty following verbal explanations or monitoring the steps of complex calculations.
There are several teaching style adaptations that can be utilized in an effort to accommodate the needs of students that are experiencing difficulty with the language of mathematics. ...
