John Proctor – Proctor is first shown to be a man who does not particularly adhere to the stereotype of men in Salem society. Initially he is shown to be quite the stereotype of a Salem male, hacking away at his wheat with his sons at his side, but a few scenes into the movie, we are able to see that Proctor has committed adultery with Abigail Williams. It is also evident that he lacks some characteristics of the other men in that he doesn’t attend church that often, hasn’t baptised one of his sons and also that his wife, Elizabeth Proctor has a moral upper hand in that she knows he has commited adultery and can tell the whole community who will frown upon John if they were to know.
