Tomorrow when the war began is the story of seven teenagers who journey to hell, and later arrive home to discover a raging war taking place in their home town. ... Narrated by the main character Ellie, “Tomorrow when the war began’ is one of six books in ‘the war series’ written by John Marsden. ... By analyzing the changes in personality in each character we can see the important environment and emotional intensity around them. ... Homer and Ellie compete from start to finish and normally one of the two end up either emotionally and/or physically hurt. She does things she never would have done before the war, such as blowing up a lawnmower with a chisel and hammer, which leads to minimal maturity change and frequent emotional distress. Through my analysis of Ellie I conclude that she doesn’t change significantly throughout‘Tomorrow, when the war began’. ... We find out his qualities at the start of the book as narrated by Ellie, and from those statements he doesn’t seem like the most levelheaded member of the group: “Homer had been quite short as a little kid but he’d filled out and grown a lot in the last few years, until he’d ended up one of the biggest guys in school. ... This is direct information telling us what Homer’s character was like before the war, not after.
