Prayer at Graduation
America is a democracy. ... In early May of 1995 the majority of the Peters Township High School senior class voted in favor of an Invocation and Benediction prayer at the Commencement Ceremony. The day before graduation a war started, “Jane Doe” vs. ... Although, the vote for prayer at my high school graduation brought on a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union to cancel the Invocation and Benediction prayers, this lawsuit did not allow school prayer at Commencement, and caused demonstrations by parents and affected the graduates by forcing us to deal with an adult decision.
Should prayer be allowed at a public school if the students vote in favor of it? ... She felt that prayer of any kind should not be allowed in the ceremony because the school was public. A court date was set for Saturday morning at 8:00 AM, and graduation was scheduled for 10:00 AM, the same morning; therefore, the school board had its back up against a wall, forced to sign an agreement on Friday.
