Analysis of “A&P” by John Updike
When I first read this story, I was impressed at how much symbolism I thought I’d be able to squeeze out of it. After rereading it, I decided that I saw one clear theme: “A&P” is about entering the world in general, being on one’s own and having to take responsibility for one’s actions. In “A&P” the boy makes a sacrifice but realizes that no one cares. ... He notices “Queenie,” the most attractive of the three girls, and thinks: “You know, it’s one thing to have a girl in a bathing suit down on the beach, where what with the glare nobody can look at each other much anyway, and another thing in the cool of the A & P, under the fluorescent lights…” (399-400).
