King Lear

Good morning young ladies, you have just seen what I feel as the most crucial scene of King Lear. ... My approach to the play would be allegorical, emphasizing the irony, such as the storm and the ‘storm’ in Lear’s mind. ... I would have Lear lavishly dressed initially to display his wealth and authority. ... The scene does become quite dramatic and I think subtle music initially should build up to Cordelia’s disinheritance and Kent’s banishment where it reaches its peak and quietens as Lear’s rage calms. ... Whilst King Lear is in his authoritative state, he stands higher than his subordinates “Attend the lords of France and Burgundy, Gloucester “ Here, Lear is both higher physically and hierarchically. The positioning of Lear on the sloping stage represents his power.

As done in the Jonathan Miller BBC version 1972, I would display Lear shaking as he rages at Cordelia “By all the operations of the orbs, From who we do exist and cease to be, Here I disclaim all my paternal care, Propinquity and property of blood” Lear shaking displays his anger and irrationality as well as his age.
