I remember reading a review of a John Williams score some years ago that described the composer as having a style and signature sound that "simply refuses to come out in the wash." This comment also quite adeptly sums up Hans Zimmer. I first became aware of Zimmer's music through his excellent score for the BBC television drama First Born. During the intervening twelve or so years, although he has matured as a composer, his style and signature sound have remained essentially unchanged. Zimmer's score for Ridley Scott's visceral contemporary take on the Roman epic is exactly what one would expect. First, Zimmer takes vocals (Lisa Gerrard), guitars, duduk, solo cello and trumpet to create an otherworldly mystical ambience particular to Gladiator.
