The steps are as follows: Since 1982, The Ohio State University at Newark has sponsored a science fair for 5th and 6th grade students who receive a "superior" rating on their science fair projects in their schools. The Science Day Committee prepared this leaflet to answer some of the most commonly asked questions about science fair projects. We hope that it assists parents, students and teachers in working together to develop quality science fair projects. Good Luck! 1. Question: What do I do first? Answer: Read the following completely. 2. Question: What is my objective? Answer: You are trying to answer a question or solve a problem using the Scientific Method. 3. Question: What is the Scientific Method? Answer: The Scientific Method is a systematic series of steps for problem solving. The steps are as follows: Step 1: Choose a QUESTION that you want to answer. (Example: How does the lack of light affect plant growth?) Step 2: Form a HYPOTHESIS. All this means is to make an educated guess about what the answer to your question will be. (Example: My hypothesis is that the lack of light will cause reduced growth rate in plants.) Step 3: Plan an EXPERIMENT that will test your hypothesis. Determine what step-by-step procedures and materials you will use to conduct your experiment. Vary only one aspect of your experiment at a time. (Ex- ample: Change the amount of light for the plant, but keep the type of plant, amount of water, type of soil and pot size the same.) Step 4: Record the DATA (results) of the experi-ment. It is a good idea to repeat an experiment several times to be sure the results are accurate. Charts, graphs, tables, and/or photographs can be an excellent way of displaying your results, as well as being easy to read. Step 5: After looking at all of your data, write your CONCLUSIONS. Tell if your hypothesis was correct or incorrect and why. 4. Question: What questions can I investigate? Answer: The following is a list of projects ideas you might consider or you may select a question you develop yourself. 1. Does caffeine affect plant growth? 2.
