Dead Man Walking Reflection The message of this film is anti-death penalty and to get people to rethink their position on this important issue. I believe that one scene that is crucial to a viewer’s understanding of the entire film is when Sister Helen goes to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Percy. She is politely greeted into their home and the Percys then describe, in detail, the night that Hope went out with Walter and how they expected her to come home. They continue their story by telling Sister that Hope’s bed was not slept in and, for a fleeting moment, thought that perhaps Hope and Walter had eloped. Unfortunately, this was not the case and their lives were shattered when some people discovered Hope’s body 6 days later. Mr. Percy’s anger and hopelessness is portrayed as he tells Sister that he wished he had grabbed an officer’s gun at the courthouse and shot Poncelet himself. Both Mr. and Mrs. Percy think that Sister Helen had “changed her mind” with regard to being Poncelet’s spiritual advisor. They are both unpleasantly surprised and angered to discover that she doesn’t see that Poncelet is “God’s mistake.” They quickly escort her from their home saying that she can’t befriend a murderer and be their friend too.
