In the election of 1880, an immeasurable circumstance was laid out before the people. During this time, James A. Garfield was elected to the presidency of the United States of America. Garfield's right hand man, Chester A. Arthur, was one who would shock those who supported him, and yet still live on to be a respectable president. As James Garfield was elected into office, an event occurred that would shock everyone. A man by the name of Charles G. tried to assassinate Garfield. The bullet stayed inside Garfield until he finally passed away on Sept. 19, 1881. Garfield's very short term left his vice-president, Chester A. Arthur, left to lead the country. There was a difference between the two people, however. James Garfield was a halfbreed, or one who was for civil service reform, while Arthur was a stalwart, or one who was for patronage.
