The poem “Living in Sin” by Adrienne Rich typifies the increasingly cyclical dissatisfaction as a product of the woman’s vain relationship without God and true love. Rich elevates to cast her perspective and pronounce the mundanity and triviality of the impassionate and ultimately meaningless ways of physically “living in sin” and the doleful, ponderous effects of this lifestyle. Rich projects and enhances this meaning by means of the literary elements entrenched in the tone, structure, and metaphorical word-work with imagery in several distinct collections. ... This instance offers a union of metaphorical imagery to display the nature of the occupant’s engagement and corroborates the central theme of unfulfilling love and life in truly “living in sin. ... ” The manifestations of this lifestyle are the surroundings itself, and the environment reciprocally contributes to “living in sin. ... “Living in Sin” thus suggestively supplants the passionless “living in sin” lifestyle with that of more self-morally fulfilling.
