What do you think was the primary cause of the Civil War? Slavery, believed by many as the primary cause of the American Civil War, caused many things to happen in the period of time leading up to the Civil War, each event having their own effect in causing the Civil War to happen. The occurrences listed below are examples of events caused primarily by the issue of slavery. Nat Turner, a slave owned by Joseph Travis of Southampton, Virginia, believed that he had been chosen by God to lead a slave rebellion. In retaliation, more than a hundred innocent slaves were killed. In 1850 Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Law. The law stated that in the future, any federal marshal who did not arrest an alleged runaway slave could be fined $1,000. Those officers capturing a fugitive slave were entitled to a fee. This encouraged some officers to kidnap free slaves and sell them to slave-owners.
