Critically examine the ‘learning organisation’ and explain its evolution through a discussion of historical management perspectives. Throughout the history of management, various perspectives are identifiable to certain time periods. One such perspective is the emergence of the classical principle during the 1800s. Around 1920, the humanistic school of thought came about and more recently modern approaches to management have been developed. The evolution through these perspectives is a result of the change in management focus and the increasing amount of uncertainty in modern society. Managers dislike ambiguity and try to make decisions so as to minimise this uncertainty. Also, adapting management views on what is needed to achieve the organisation’s goals effectively and efficiently have played a part in changing management perspectives through time. Finally, the progression through these management concepts has lead to the principle known as the learning organisation.
