Should physical education educate for sport?
The focus for my essay is to overcome the argument and questioning of wether physical education should educate for sport, from the authors point of view and myself to see if I agree/disagree with the authors I have chosen to argue with or against. ... I also want to find out the similarities between the authors thoughts, wether there are differences between sport and physical education. Lastly I would also like to find out what role sporting and physical education has at school. (Hillary Commission 1996) stated “the role of the school is to provide opportunities for students, regardless of their abilities, to participate in sport… In physical education program many sports skills are experienced and acquired” (p. ...
Grant & Pope (2000) states “sport is a significant component of our world culture and the cornerstone of physical education… when used properly, sport activities can and should promote educational objectives of physical education” (p. ...
In my opinion I would agree with what Grant and Pope have stated in the quote above as sport plays a significant part in the worlds society today and always has been, and people have needed physical education to be able to learn how to play these sporting activities. Today physical education is mainly taught throughout primary and secondary schools. Even though physical education teachers are in a contentious debate, which suggests sport, should be part of the curriculum. ... In this case I think sport should be brought into the curriculum to promote educational objectives in physical education and to teach the children different drills that accompany a sport, therefore half the lesson could be educating them on how to play the game and the other half on actually playing the sporting activity. This approach would give them a greater overview on how physical education contributed towards their sporting abilities.
