I Introduction

The fairy tale is often mixed up with folk tales, myths or legends. It is not always easy to divide between all those different kinds of literature, but there are some points, if one takes them into conclusion, it is at least easier to say whether this or that peace of literature belongs to the literary fairy tale or not. ... The first point says that the literary fairy tale has to be “written by a single identifiable author” . ... The second point Tismar gives is that the fairy tale “is thus synthetic, artificial, and elaborate in comparison to the indigenous formation of the folk tale”. But he also gives the fact that the differences between both kinds of tales “do not imply that one genre is better than the other”. ... And at least Tismar states that “the literary fairy tale is not an independent genre but can only be understood and defined by its relationship to the oral tale as well as to the legend, novella, novel” and other tales. These points are not a guide to surely identify literary fairy tales, but they give at least a first hint to it.
In this essay two tales of the Scottish author Sir James Matthew Barrie, “Peter Pan or the boy who would not grow up” and “Mary Rose”, will be in the centre of interest. They will be compared with regard the wonder of staying young, which is to be found in both fairy-tales, in connection to Barrie himself. The appearance of the theme sexuality in the tales will also be compared to Barrie’s life. ... Following that “Peter Pan” will be examined first before a detailed analysis of the play “Mary Rose” will be given. ... There he got to know the family Llewelyn Davis with their 5 boys with whom he often played and whom he often told tales. ...
Those problems are partly reflected in the play “Peter Pan or the boy who would not grow up” which will be the next point of the paper. ... 2 Peter Pan or the boy who would not grow up

“Peter Pan” was originally written as a play, but never the less it is a fairy tale as well. ... One day a boy called Peter Pan visits them with his friend Tinker Bell, who is a fairy. ... The girl, Wendy, will be the mother for Peter and the lost boys. ... Just Peter does not want to grow up. Even though the children do not want to leave Peter alone they decide to go, but Wendy also promises she will come back next spring and do the spring cleaning for Peter.
The play ends with a dream where Wendy visits Peter one year later in Never Land and Peter promised to visit Wendy to hear the stories which are told about him.

a) Construction of the play “Peter Pan”

The first four page of the play “Peter Pan or the boy who would not grow up” are a description for the actors so that they now how to build up the stage and how the characters in the play have to behave. ... The play is divided into five acts and only act five is subdivided into two scenes. The first act comprises the introduction to the actors and the readers as well as a description of a normal evening in the Darling house and the late arrival of Peter and Tinker Bell. ... During this fight Peter gets wounded and Wendy has to leave him on a rock in the sea. ... And when Peter comes back the children decide to go back into the real world and to leave Never Land. ... Peter and the children are able to fight the pirates in the end. In the second scene of this act the old nursery of the darling family is the place where every boy “finds” a mother and Misses Darling and her husband are very glad to have their children back.

b) Connections between Barrie and Peter Pan

During his childhood Barrie had the problem that he recognised that his brother, who died at the age of 14 years, would always stay a boy in the minds of people who knew him and this was what Barrie wanted for himself as well. He did not want to become an adult and this is reflected in his development of the character of Peter Pan who wants the same. The only difference is that for Peter it was possible, Barrie never had a choice even though this idea was in his mind since he was a child. The name for the protagonist of his tale, Peter, was taken from the youngest of the Llewelyn Davis brothers whom he told all tales years before he wrote them down. ... The tale of “Peter Pan” brings up several questions which are also connected to Barrie’s life. ... Barrie was not able to love in a normal way and neither is Peter.
