The Skinny on Fats 1 Fats VS Fats The Skinny on Fats Fats VS Fats The Skinny on Fats Tanya McIntosh Mrs. Hanright December, 10 2002 The Skinny on Fats 2 The Skinny on Fats Fat is an important topic. For over two decades, nutrition experts have stressed how important a diet low fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol is. But science is changing and our understanding of the health benefits and the essential role of fatty acids in our diet has improved. In this report I will examine the different types of fat such as trans fat, omega 3 fatty acids, saturated fat, and unsaturated fat. I will also examine which ones are bad for your health and which ones are good. A) What is Fat? Suppose your doctor told you that you needed to get your serum cholesterol level down, because your triglycerides are extremely high. You need to cut the fat, and saturated fat out of your diet. Just what would all of those words mean to you? And what would you do about them? To understand the role of fat in both health and chronic disease, we need to start with the basics. Fat is a group of compounds made of glycerol and fatty acids( The American dietetic associations complete food and nutrition guide, 1998). It is one of the three main nutrients in food that supply energy. Fat can cause serious health risks such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, prostate cancer, and obesity. It is found in many foods such as pizza, hamburgers, steak, tacos, ice-cream, lasagne, and cheese. The Skinny on Fats 3 B) Trans- Fatty Acids Trans fatty acids, also known as trans fat, are made during partial hydrogenation of vegetable oils (Stewart, n.d).
