The Apostle Peter
The Apostle Peter was arguably the most significant contemporary of Jesus. Peter was a disciple of Jesus throughout his ministry, and carried out his mission after he died. Through Peter, we are able to get a more intimate glimpse of Jesus. Many gospel authors present Peter as a foil—using him to illustrate common human misconceptions about Jesus’ ministry and imminent death. However, there was no doubt that Peter had complete faith in Jesus and would ultimately become the cornerstone of the Christian Church.
Peter, also known as Simon (sometimes appearing as Symeon), was born in Bethsaida to Jona. ... Peter’s brother was the Apostle Phillip. When he got older, Peter got married and settled in Capharnaum with his mother-in-law. ...
Along with his brother Phillip, Peter was one of the first people called by Jesus to be his disciple. When Jesus met Peter he gave him the name “Cephas,” which is Aramaic for “rock.” Peter quickly distinguished himself as a leader among the disciples through his firmness of faith, devotion, and true love for Jesus. In the Gospels, Peter is always placed first in the list of disciples and often acts as a spokesman for the group.
When Jesus asks his disciples who people say that he is, Peter is the first to recognize him as the “Messiah” (Matthew 16:13-20, Mark 1:16-18, Luke 9:18-22).
