Darkness and light. ... For without darkness, one could not distinguish the light and vice versa. The dark and light imagery used in literature conveys a number of emotions: hope, despair, fear, comfort. ... In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” Poe uses the darkness of the old man’s bedchamber and the silence of the night to instill a sense of doom and death. ... ” (1152)
The light imagery in this story seems to be fear as well, not as much the old man’s fear, but the narrator’s. ... ” (1152) It also seems to be a kind of light of judgment. ...
Darkness is generally a good symbol for evil. ... Darkness is evil in Hawthorne’s “Goodman Brown. ... ” (642) Darkness is used to give a sense of void, of solitude. It separates him from his Faith and from all the goodness and comfort that light brings.
Light imagery is incredibly scarce in this story. ... She is of course, his belief in goodness, his bringer of light. And when he vows to stand against the devil in the woods and prays to the heavens the stars are “brightening” as if his Faith, his light, is getting stronger. ...
Darkness can sometimes be a force that seems to oppress and suffocate. ... The water is described as “blackness” and more he sinks the greater the darkness becomes. ... His captors are an oppressive force like the darkness he sees them as. ... And at the end after he sees the heavenly vision of his wife “all is darkness and silence.” (168)
Light can be savior as in “Occurrence,” when Peyton is in the river. He sees above him “a gleam of light” (165) it signifies hope, and survival. The light is the path to air, as he sinks it dims to a “mere glimmer” (165) and when he begins to rise it “began to grow and brighten. ... ” (167) The forest holds a similar beauty as “a strange, roseate light shone through the tree trunks.” (167) During his travels back to his home, to safety, he follows “the rounding sun” (167) as if it’s a guiding light to sanctuary. During the night, he reaches a road where “the black bodies of the great trees formed a straight wall on both sides” (168) and in the sky, “great golden stars” (168) light his way.
