Flood One Historic Event Two Approaches Exploring the similarities and differences of The Flood as found

... We see this in the story of ‘the flood’ in Gilgamesh, and in the flood story of ‘the Bible. ... The Bible speaks of the Hebrew’s existence and development and their monotheistic society with one god, and Gilgamesh represents a polytheistic society with many gods. These two stories are not attempts to persuade or discredit the other, but they serve to reinforce the premise that creation myths are subjective and influenced by the values and norms of that era.

The flood mentioned in Gilgamesh is comparable to the flood of biblical times for many reasons. ... Noah on the other hand is simply told that the Lord will establish a covenant with him and he and his family have been chosen to survive the flood (Genesis chp. ... However, according to Genesis where Noah was told to bring a pair of every living flesh, of fowl, of cattle, every creeping thing and two of every sort his counterpart was only instructed to take the seed of all living creatures. ...

The flood in the bible raged for forty days and forty nights while the flood in Gilgamesh only lasted for six days because it says that on the seventh day the sea was calm, “For six days and six nights the winds blew, torrent and tempest and flood overwhelmed the world, tempest and flood raged together like warring hosts. When the seventh day dawned the storm from the south subsided, the sea grew calm, the flood was stilled,” (Gilgamesh pt5 p37). They, both when realizing that the flood had stopped went and opened a window and saw that the earth was covered with water for miles and miles. ... He then sent out a dove three times to see if the waters had removed from the face of the ground - on the first nothing was found on the second the dove returned with a twig from an olive branch on the third trip the dove did not return.
