Activity 2-B Estates General: assembly of the estates of all France; last meeting in 1789 Edict of Nantes: A public command or ordinance by the sovereign power; the proclamation of a law made by an absolute authority, as if by the very act of announcement; a decree; as, the edicts of the Roman emperors; the edicts of the French monarch. An edict issued by Henry IV. (A. D. 1598), giving toleration to Protestants. Its revocation by Louis XIV. (A. D. 1685) was followed by terrible persecutions and the expatriation of thousands of French Protestants. Huguenots: A French Protestant of the 16th and 17th centuries. Intendants: An administrative official serving a French, Spanish, or Portuguese monarch. The Sun King: King of France from 1643 to 1715; his long reign was marked by the expansion of French influence in Europe and by the magnificence of his court and the Palace of Versailles Divine Right Of Kings: The straight course; adherence to duty; obedience to lawful authority, divine or human; freedom from guilt, -- the opposite of moral wrong.
