William Styron illustrates this condition of humanity in his description of the Ranger being launched from Paul’s perspective. He says:
And it had been thrilling to watch the mechanics at once brutish and delicate…”Imagine such a delicate balance! ... Paul is thrilled by these inner workings, for at once they were both brutish and delicate, creating a delicate balance. ... Through the description of these happenings, Styron subtly reveals the balance that exists. He does so by constantly alternating between words that have either delicate or brutish connotations. ... All of these things are inevitable in its life.
