Bartleby in Melville’s short story Bartleby the Scrivener can be analyzed from a number of perspectives. ... Not only as a man affecting another man, but as Bartleby personifying the inner conflict the Lawyer has with the side condemning his current life style. ... The Lawyer’s doubt about the sterile impersonal lifestyle he lives is embodied in Bartleby. Only when Bartleby “arrives” does the lawyer start to question his professional life style.
When Bartleby first came to the office the Lawyer isolated him, “I procured a high green folding screen which might entirely isolate Bartleby…(88)” He did not want to be influenced by Bartleby and disrupt his content state of mind. However, he is unable to ignore Bartleby as his defiance escalates. The lawyer is unable to just accept Bartleby’s eccentric behavior as he is with his other clerks, instead he becomes strangely obsessed and determined to understand his behavior.
