Elements of Classicism in John Donne’s Work
Benjamin Franklin once said that “fish and houseguests smell after three days. ... There are five elements that make a classic a classic, and all five of these elements are exhibited in John Donne’s poetry.
The first element of classicism is artistic excellence. ... Donne’s poetry has become some of the most studied work of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In a brief introduction to Donne’s works in 100 Best Loved Poems Philip Smith said that Donne “combined brilliant craftsmanship, heartfelt emotion and intellectual rigor.” These qualities make Donne’s work artistically excellent.
