Vanessa:     Dynamic character
Appearance: Page 88 – “No one in their right mind would have said what a beautiful child for I was big – boned like my grandfather Connor and had straight lanky black hair like a Blackfoot or Cree.”
Rebellious/can be herself when alone: Page 89 – “I jumped down from the birch bough and ran to the house, yelling, making as much noise as I could. ...

Father:          Static character. ...

Mother:     Static character. ...

Grandmother:     static character. ...

Noreen:     New character. ... ”

Title:          “A bird in the house means a death in the house.” Page 98

Bird means Vanessa and she is in her Cage, the house. Through out the short stories, Vanessa seems to be trapped in the house. Makes sense because the book is about Vanessa and because of Noreen’s superstition about the bird in the house meaning death, it is ironic that people in Vanessa’s life keep dying as she is trapped in her cage.
