The loss of a fetus before it is able to live outside the womb is called abortion. Abortions can be intentionally caused, or induced. Induced abortion is regarded as a moral issue in some cultures. In others it is seen as an acceptable way to end unplanned pregnancy. The practice of abortion was widespread in ancient times as a method of birth control. Later it was forbidden by most world religions, but it was not considered an offense in secular law until the 19th century. Abortion is one of the most persistently controversial issues in America’s culture and politics today. This conflict has said to be perhaps reflective of the nation ambivalence over abortion. Many people believe that the controversy is a two-sided debate, but it is actually a multifaceted dispute. For example, many that are “pro life” think that abortion is actually killing a human being. People who are “pro choice” think that a woman should be in charge of her body.
