In our lab experiment we decided to test the efficiency of sun block. We choose two different strengths of the same brand of sun block. The fist kind was Coppertone SPF 45 and the second kind was Coppertone SPF 15. When we decided to do this experiment we wanted to see what kind of difference the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) made. Sun cancer is becoming a serious problem in the world and the suggested use of sun block is becoming more popular. We wanted to put this daily product to test. After doing some research, we came up with a hypothesis. As our hypothesis we thought that the yeast cells would grow different based on which sunscreen was applied to the dish. I thought that this would be an obvious hypothesis because of the use of sun block. The main use for having the different SPF’s is so that the user can decide how much UVB rays will reach their skin. After we figured out our hypothesis, we had to expand on it a bit more. We came up with a prediction of what specifically we thought was going to happen in our experiment. Since SPF 45 is suppose to block more ultra violet rays, we figured that the plate with it on it would grow more. This is because there are less ultra violet rays getting to the yeast cells. On the other hand, we thought that the SPF 15 wouldn’t block, as much and therefore less yeast would grow. In order to prove or disprove our predictions, we needed to conduct an experiment that would show the differences between the SPF 15 and the SPF 30.
