At one point or another in our lives, many people I know have been forced to deal with the issues of an eating disorder. ... population, roughly eight million people, suffers from an eating disorder with ninety percent of cases developing before the age of twenty (“Statistics”). According to the definition found on the National Eating Disorder Association’s website an eating disorder is, “an extreme emotion, attitude, or behavior surrounding weight and food issues. ... This past fall I joined a support group within my community designed specifically for young people faced with or recovering from an eating disorder. At our meetings we discussed specific factors that we felt contributed to our conditions and how they helped promote our issues with food. Within the following paragraphs I will show that there are, in fact, many factors promoting eating disorders within the younger female population, however the three largest are societal pressures, biological influences and media attention. ... Women are given a message at a very young age that in order to be happy and successful, they must be physically attractive. ... It’s very subtle – nobody comes out and says fat girls don’t get dates, but you see a crowd of young women, and the one getting attention from a man is the one who’s tall and thin” (qtd. ... Even celebrities are aware of the pressures surrounding young women and the forced focus on their appearance. In an online article written by Heather Mudgett, tennis superstar Monica Seles acknowledges that, “Women in society have much tougher pressure to be thin than their male counterparts. ... The pressure to succeed academically, financially, athletically, and beyond are all large parts of societal pressures that young women face daily. ... Many of my friends faced similar feelings and daily struggles, which in turn has lead to poor self-esteem and doubts about our capabilities as young women facing the real world for the first time. ...
Although societal pressure is a factor leading to eating disorders, it is not the only one.
