The ending of the story, “Odour of Chrysanthemums”, evokes in me sadness and a kind of pity for Elizabeth and Walter Bates. The story evokes sadness in me because the two of them were never able to find true love. Instead, their marriage had been rooted in physical lust, and nothing else. In today’s society, marriage is supposed to be a union of two souls in love with each other’s character and personality. However, the marriage between Elizabeth and Walter Bates was based solely on physical attraction. This can be seen from the way Elizabeth reacted to Walter’s death. It was only after his death that she realised that the two of them had absolutely nothing in common --- “There had been nothing between them, and yet they had come together.” After years of unfulfilling marriage, she finally comprehended the simple fact that the only thing in common between the two of them was that they were both alive.
