Warriors Don’t Cry Essay Brad Hubenthal June 6, 2001 There was once a time when people were treated unfairly and not respected. This was a time of integration that took place in the 1950's. In the novel, Warriors Don’t Cry by Melba Beals, she and eight other individuals are the victims of the segregation war. As they attend Central High they are faced with segregation, prejudice, and discrimination. Throughout the novel segregation was a big issue that took place. For instance, “Does that mean that we have to go to school with white people,” Melba asked. This was a big deal to them due to the fact that they were the only African Americans on campus. To be them would be very hard to get used to because of all the hatred going around in the school. Governor Faubus was very intent in wanting to keep the school segregated when a headline read, “Faubus Calls National Guard to Keep School Segregated.” Going this far to keep the school segregated was an act of hatred and racism.
