Cinthya Giron August 9, 2003 ALD 322 Serving at The Odyssey Private School My summer experience volunteering at The Odyssey Private School for children with disabilities held me responsible for helping to provide phonics instructions that will promote students’ mastery of basic decoding skills. The Odyssey is a private school that enrolls only students with disabilities who have a high IQ. These kids are smart and have that desire to elevate themselves but because of their disability they need to be set in a school that will work with them at a slower pace, which is why The Odyssey is a perfect educational system for them. Mrs. Darley and Mr. Brinson are instructors who are there to help these children acquire knowledge and establish friendships with each other. At 1:30 till 3:30p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday I worked with students who were between the ages of 12-15 in the Time Travelers class as well as the Games and Arts class. Time Travelers is a class that goes back in time in a specific culture. Mrs. Darley focuses on a specific time period and starts off by telling them about the people who lived in that era as well as their traditions. She also teaches them how important the actions of the people were in that culture. Afterwards she would ask the students to draw a picture on anything that they felt is important to illustrate to other students in other classes over that era. When they were studying the year of the dragon my kids all drew huge dragons and colored them using bright colors. They cut it out and put them all over the hallway. It was neat to see how every ones dragon was so different and how a lot of the child’s personality was displayed in their drawing. Mr. Brinson is the instructor for the Games and Arts class which is the last class that I helped with. The students and I learned how to play a new game in every class.
