In the book Their Eyes Were Watching God, there are many important symbols. One of
the most important symbols is the pear tree. ... "Janie saw her life as a great tree in leaf with suffered, things enjoyed,
things done and undone. Dawn and doom was in the branches"; the pear tree symbolizes Janies life (8). Janies three marriages caused her tree to bloom and die twice, but it never bears literal fruit. The pear tree changes as Janie does during her childhood and three marriages.
Janies tree goes though stages. Her tree starts off as a sapling without roots and Nanny as its only bud, because Janie has never seen or meet her mother and father. Nanny lets Janie know that her tree is rootless; "You know, honey, us colored folks is branches without roots . ... Janies tree first blossoms when she comes to her awakening underneath the pear tree, watching the bees pollinate the blossoms. She seems to understand the tree and the marvel and beauty of procreation on an amazingly close and intense level:
"She saw a dust-bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a bloom; the thousand sister-calyxes arch to meet the love embrace and the ecstatic shiver of the tree from root to tiniest branch creaming in every blossom and frothing with delight. ...
At this point Janie tree has blossomed, because she has had her sexual epiphany; thus this is the first stage.
