The Wave Swinger at Cedar Point is a classic ride that can be found practically at any amusement park in the world. The ride has swing-like seats that are suspended to a large circular disc that rises, rotates, and tilts giving the rider the affect as floating through the air. As the speed of the circular disc increases, the riders are swung almost parallel to the ground. Swings use a fundamental of physics known as centripetal acceleration, which is the acceleration directed towards the center of a circular path. In order to find the centripetal acceleration (ac), other variables must first be found. First the time it takes for one complete revolution must be measured. The time was measured in three different trials and the average was used as the established time it took to rotate completely around. Time for one complete revolution Trial One 6.22 sec Trial Two 6.13 sec Trial Three 6.05 sec Average Time 6.13 sec The second variable that must be determined is the circumference of the path the swings travel on.
