When the English were interested in western lands again after the failure of the Roanoke Colony, King James was behind their voyage. The joint-stock companies seeking to settle the new land were the Virginia Company and the Massachusetts Bay Company. Although both colonists of Chesapeake Bay and Massachusetts Bay came from England, their reasons differed, along with the beginnings of their settlements and places in society. The locations of the settlements were different, as were the plants that could be grown and food that could be found. Even though Jamestown colonists strived to exploit lands, the Puritans were concerned with religious freedom. Native Americans play large roles in the two colonies too, although the Chesapeake settler’s relations with them differed from the Puritans. Due to the Virginia colony being in a different part of America than the Massachusetts Bay colony, the type of plants grown and climates differed significantly. The document containing the Articles of Agreement proves that in order to sustain somewhat normal life in Massachusetts, farming communities had to be made. Without these communities, the variety of food and other essential crops wouldn’t have been sown with the cold climate and dry, hard soil. Due to each member of the farming neighborhood having their own specific crop to plant and care for, they didn’t have to worry about not having additional plants because other people of the community would plant it and share theirs.
