Sense and sensibility
After World War II Europe was severely damaged. There were shortage of food and more than 30 million people had lost their lifes. In this state of chaos, many people were wondering how to rebuild the continent into the prosperous state it was before the tragical war. At this stage communism stood strong in eastern European countries and Western Europe could easily become another victim of their reign. Western Europe needed money and equipment to rebuild and restructure the post- war economy, and communism seemed like a good answer for many people. Western European states were trying to sort things out without having to resort to communism, but this was easier said than done. They lacked both capital and basic rescources such as coal and steel wich could be to great help in this rebuilding period. Things were not looking good. If they did not get together and cooperate their only option would be to resort to communism or socialism.
