Is God merciful

In all the stories that we have read in the Bible, God has been a major character. In the story of Cain and Abel, Genesis, Chapter 4, God acts as though he favors Abel and that is the reason why Cain kills his brother. God does not seem very fair in this situation. ... God seeing violence and corruption everywhere decides to destroy all of the people and animals that he had created. Again, God does not seem kind here. In the book of Jonah and the great fish, God wants what he wants. He puts Jonah in the fish’s belly for three days and three nights until he does what God tells him to do. In these three stories/chapters, God uses his power to the greatest extent. ... There was a time when they both made offerings to God. ... Of course, God was more pleased with Abel’s gift more than with Cain’s. ... God asked Cain why he was so angry, “Why art thou wroth? ... ” It seems like God is basically saying that if one works hard then he will succeed but if he does not and is not successful it will be his own fault. ... Maybe he thought that God was telling him that he did not do well and, therefore, will not succeed but his brother, Abel, will. ... God is, of course, very angry and punishes Cain by forcing him to wander the earth an outcast. ... Cain is afraid that when he is wandering someone will kill him, so God puts a mark on him so that everyone will know it is he and Cain will be safe. This is a merciful thing to do. God says, “Therefore whosever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” In the beginning of the Chapter it seems as if God favored Abel and that made Cain jealous, but in the end God was very fair with Cain.
