What were the economies, corporations and governments among the 100 largest economic entities at the end of the twentieth century? Recognition of the 100 largest economic entities at the end of the twentieth century (1999, the most current year for all information available) provides a useful benchmark for measuring growth and change on a world-wide basis. Contained in this list are trade-blocks/custom unions, such as NAFTA or the EU; national economies; corporations; and governments. This list does not include political subdivisions of nation-states. The reason for this is that many of the fifty United States would then have made the list. For example, California would be number 14 on the list, ahead of Italy, and the sixth largest national economy in the world, behind the United States, Japan, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.
