This Critical Evaluation of Literature is written on William Shakespeare’s widely acclaimed play ‘MacBeth’. ‘MacBeth’ charters the downfall of a Scottish King, a once noble Thane, who, after hearing the prophecies of three witches, commits regicide to take the throne. The play follows MacBeth as he continues to murder to keep the crown. Eventually the noble MacDuff overthrows him and in a dramatic ending MacBeth is killed. ... MacBeth was written in 1605 while Shakespeare’s company was under Royal Patronage. ... In the play King Duncan’s death marks the start of MacBeth’s downfall. ... The three I will focus on are the witches, Lady MacBeth and MacBeth. ... Instead they stick to what will happen not how it will happen – “All hail MacBeth, that shalt be King hereafter”. They unintentionally plant the idea of murder in MacBeth’s mind. It is MacBeth who brings up the thought of murder first in act one, scene three, “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical shakes so my single state of man that function is smother’d in sunrise”. This also reveals MacBeth is disturbed by the prophecies, something I do not think the witches accounted for. In fact they would not even have met MacBeth in the first place had their power of prophecy, their chief function, not got the better of them. The witch leader Hecate seems quite angry that they ever spoke to MacBeth. Before they meet with MacBeth a second time she lectures them, “How did you dare to trade and traffic with MacBeth in riddles and affairs of death;” I feel it is only then the witches realise what they have done. I feel the witches intentions then turn to good as although they can not take back what they said, MacBeth by this stage has already murdered Duncan they set about creating another meeting with MacBeth in which by presenting him with a series of apparitions they make things clearer for him thus undoing some of their bad work.
