Old vs New Imperialism

Imperialism occurs when a strong nation takes over a weaker nation or region and dominates its economic, political, or cultural life. ... The first phase which is called Old Imperialism began with the expansion of Portugal and Spain in the sixteenth century in some parts of Asia such as Malacca, Java, the Moluccas, the Philippine etc. ... However, the motivations of Old and New Imperialism were also different. In the time of Old Imperialism, trading was the only purpose and they all wanted to avoid territorial responsibilities. But during New Imperialism period, there were more causes for their further expansion. ... And the desire of individual servants to make personal fortunes through Asian rulers also contributed to the further political intervention of the New Imperialism.
