Sookan’s family and many other Korean families during World War II were desperate to escape to freedom. There weren’t a lot of people who could help and guide them to freedom, so they were forced to trust whoever offered to help. Of course, arrangements of traveling to the South had to be secret from the Russians or Japanese, or you would be considered a traitor. Trust was one of the most crucial factors during the war. The professional guide who was supposed to be getting Sookan, her brother Inchun, and their mother safely to the South, betrayed them because he gave their mother up to the Communist soldiers. If I was ever in a situation similar to this where I had to decide whether or not to trust someone who I would depend on for my life, I’m not quite sure what I would do.
