How successful was the League in the 1920s?
The Birth of the League
After the First World War, in which almost all the world was affected, everyone agreed that a League of Nations, an international organisation which could solve international problems without going into war in order to keep peace, needed to be set up. Britain, claimed that the League should be a simple organisation; France, as it was the country which had suffered the most, wanted a strong League with its own army. But, actually, President Wilson who wanted the League to be like a world parliament where representatives of all nations could meet together regularly to decide on any matters which affected them all, won. ...
Many people were angry by Wilson’s arrogant style and thought that the League was too idealist. But Wilson claimed that the League, with the United States , could be a powerful peace maker. ...
A Body Blow to the League
Wilson met resistance from Americans. They didn’t join the war because of several reasons:
Ø There were many Germans immigrants USA joining the League as it squeezed reparations payments out of Germany. ...

Ø The Assembly: was the League’s Parliament. It met once an year and could recommend action to the Council and could vote on:

l Others ideas put forward by the Council
Ø The Permanent Court of International Justice: it set disputes between countries peacefully.
Ø The Secretariat: it kept records of the League meetings and prepared reports for the different agencies of the League. ...
