Aspiring to be an architect, Escher enrolled in the School for Architecture and Decorative Art in Harlem. However Escher gave up architecture in favor of graphic art- drawing and printmaking. ... In the 1930s, Facism in Italy made life impossible for Escher and his family, so they moved to Switzerland, then to Belgium. In 1941, with World War 2 under way and German troops occupying Brussels, Escher returned to Holland and settled in Baarn, where he lived and worked until shortly before his death.
