Apartheid Essay By Johanna De backer ‘The system of apartheid caused so much misery and outrage it could not survive’ The word apartheid comes from the Afrikaans language, literally meaning apartness. ... White settlement began in South Africa in 1652 and blacks have been discriminated against since this time, but apartheid was only systematized under law when the Afrikaner nationalists came to power in 1948. ... The government promoted apartheid as ‘separate development policy’ and believed it to be good for the blacks to be restricted to their ‘homelands’ and develop on their own. ... They were not allowed to vote nor have any say in government and when they formed groups such as the ANC (African National Congress) to rally against apartheid the government restricted non-white unions. There were many attempts to protest against apartheid over the years, most of them restricted by the government, but one of the biggest protests was the Soweto Uprising in 1976.
