The biggest theme in this book is the theme of Social Structure. Oliver Twist is a poor boy. He is forced to live his life off whatever people give him. This book was written to show how the Victorian Middle Class looked at the poor, or lower classes. The only way paupers like Oliver were to work in Workhouses. These workhouses were purposely disgusting so that the factory owners would scar away the poor. Wealth had a big thing to do with your rights. If you were wealthy you could vote. Therefore these poor people had no say in there own government. There were though, laws that governed the poor. These laws though prevented the poor from the relief that they needed.
