What is the most frightening thing, to be laughed at? Or being completely alone and without friends? Is it best to leave a group who bully individuals unable to defend themselves and be alone? Or is it best to stay with the group and join in? These are dilemmas that many people experience during childhood. Group pressure is an important theme in this short story. The choice between the group and oneself. How much is a friendship worth at the cost of another individual, and the consequences as a result of this. There appears to be several central themes. It could be about friendship, choosing the right friends and environments. Elizabeth's friends are the kind who appear oppressive, using bullying to make them look cool. If you are an "ugly" or a "poor” kid you are constantly having to defend yourself and forgive others, in exchange for friendship. Behind all this it is the attitude of the parents, their obligation to raise the children properly.
