Don Quijote displays his insanity in several instances throughout the book. One of these instances was Don Quijote’s encounter with the windmills. Accompanied by Sancho, Don Quijote discovers a grouping of thirty or forty windmills. He completely distorts reality as he states “La fortuna esta guiando nuestras cosas mejor de lo que desearamos; porque ves alli, amigo Sancho Panza, donde se hallan treinta o pocos mas enormes gigantes, con quienes pienso hacer batalla y quitarles a todos la vida” (Cervantes 45) Sancho tries to bring Don Quijote back to reality by saying that they were “sino molinos de viento” (45) However, Don Quijote remains strong in his resolve to fight.
